Berkshire Disability Information Network (bdin) based at Brakenhale School, Bracknell, will be forced to close at the end of March as a result of discontinuation of funding from the Berkshire local authorities. Local and national charities have spoken out to condemn the closure as short sighted – and a total waste. Chairman of bdin, Norman Jones, said: ‘It is particularly galling that bdin has been forced to close at a time when the government is at long last beginning to recognise the need of helping and informing disabled people’. The move comes despite announcements and a report from the Government’s Office for Disability Issues (Improving Information for Disabled People) saying voluntary organisations outperform local authorities in joining-up information, especially local information. bdin assists more than 3000 disabled people, carers and health and social care professionals a year.
